In order to cement the loyalties of subordinates who ran the security and military apparatus that kept the population under control, Kim passed out lagniappes like booze, cars, and, it is rumored, orgies.

So how could anyone with any shred of humanity mourn such a monster?
Charles Hutzler of the Associated Press provides some insight:
...the mass mourning over the death of dictator Kim Jong Il is being driven by a mix of forces. Loss and fear of an uncertain future -- the same emotions that many feel at the death of a loved one -- become contagious in crowds. Added to that are the perils of crossing a police state.
Totalitarian cults of personality are aimed at creating a sense of dependence on the leader. He is the protector, the "helmsman" (as Mao liked to be called) who takes care of the helpless. To be sure, Obama is no Mao, Kim or Stalin, but to my eyes he attempts to assume a similar role as protector of the helpless, a group with the Occupy Movement now defines as 99%, basically the entire country, minus the parasitical kulaks in the one percent. I find the odor of a personality cult that has been around him ever since he entered the race for the presidency disturbing.
Hutzler emphasizes the pressures toward conformity, both from the police state watching eyes, but also from the human impulse to conform to what others around them are feeling.
It's the bandwagon effect: a powerful urge to belong to a group that impels people to behave in ways they might not ordinarily.
"Mourning, like laughter, is contagious in a social network," said Scott Atran, an American anthropologist who studies the psychology of groups at France's National Center for Scientific Research. Smoking and obesity, among other traits, he said, are often tied to the influence of a person's social mix.
"People usually believe they are slightly exceptional to the norm. But if they want to be part of the group they overexaggerate and go toward the extreme of what they think the norm is," Atran said
In many ways, our own media seek to create a bandwagon effect. With radically decreasing effectiveness. North Korea has no such problems. The internet doesn't exist, and the state carefully orchestrates everything in the media:
[North Korea's] government rigidly defines social norms and portrays the leader as a protective father who keeps the nation safe and is deserving of total obedience in return. The message is inculcated through absolute control over the school curriculum and the media.
"Bad things have happened to North Koreans who refused the cult of personality around Kim Jong Il.
Fortunately, nothing bad happens to Americans who refuse the cult of personality around Obama. We are nothing remotely like a totalitarian state. But we do have political and media factions who have studied and learned from the techniques of mind control practiced in Communist states. When they control a situation, as they do at many universities, political correctness is used to control discourse. And race card is frequently played to demonize critics of Obama, and now Eric Holder.
The big problem they face is that truth is so corrosive, and without absolute social and media control, cynicism can poison the propaganda. That is what happened to the Soviet satellites, and then the USSR itself. North Korea is the unique exception, a hermit kingdom, isolated from the rest of the world and its intoxicating flow of information.

Myths about psychopaths busted

(Medical Xpress) -- New research challenges the belief that psychopaths are born not made, and suggests psychopaths may even be able to change their spots.

While psychopaths in the popular like Patrick Bateman in the film American Psycho or Alex in Clockwork Orange are portrayed as charming, guiltless and terrifying, the research suggests that is a much more complex personality disorder and one that is widely misunderstood.

Dr Devon Polaschek from Victoria University’s School of Psychology was one of four researchers who examined psychopathy in research about to be published in the leading public policy journal of the Association for Psychological Science, Psychological Science in the Public Interest.

"We pulled together the very extensive research and theoretical literature on psychopathy and one of the important things we found was the lack of consensus among scientists about the disorder," says Dr Polaschek.

She says the research sought to dispel some of the myths and assumptions that people often make about psychopathy.

"There’s a view that psychopaths are born not made but research doesn’t support this. It’s also not always a lifelong disorder per se -- people who show signs of psychopathy in adolescence don’t necessarily show this in early adulthood for instance, or vice versa," she says.

“Most significantly, although many people assume that psychopathy is untreatable, there is next to no scientific evidence either way.”

Dr Polaschek, a clinical psychologist, came to this research because of her work with high risk prisoners.

"My work is focused on their rehabilitation and reducing criminal risk through well-designed psychological programmes."

She says their research indicates that a sizeable group of adult offenders labelled as psychopathic are actually more emotionally disturbed than emotionally detached.

"The research raises some key issues about how we should deal with this problem. Gaining a clear understanding of the disorder is important because important public policy decisions are made based on research," says Dr Polaschek.

As part of IBM's "5 in 5" forecasts of predictions, the company says that "minding reading" (more like mind control) will no longer be a science fiction dream and that within five years, we'll all be controlling our computers and smartphones by just wiggling our brains.

While Apple focuses on speech technology with Siri, IBM believes the next revolution will involve our brains. To tackle and make mind control a reality, we'd all need to wear something like Emotiv's EPOC neuroheadset that's equipped with sensors that read electrical brain signals.

According to IBM Research News "the idea is to use these electrical synapses to also do everyday activities such as placing a phone call, turning on the lights or even in the healthcare space for rehabilitation."

That's great news, but we're not quite ready for mind reading yet. Devices like the EPOC are still kind of bulky and make you look like a dorky cyborg.

The magic will happen when the sensors get miniaturized.
By 2017, like all technology, the EPOC or other similar technologies will probably get smaller. So I can imagine it will have completely dry sensors, and I'd be wearing it all the time, perhaps embedded into a baseball cap, and with a finer range of thought patterns detected and connected directly to my mobile phone - allowing me to interact with the world just by thinking particular thoughts. In doing this I could wonder what the traffic will be like on the way home and this information would pop up in front of me.

Voice-control is really coming into its own with Kinect, Siri and Google/Bing search, but I'm skeptic as to whether to it becoming real in five years. I've played with "mind concentrating" gear like Mattel's Radica Mindflex Duel game, and it didn't exactly blow my mind. It barely worked. So excuse me if I'm not convinced that mind-control/mind-reading will be functional within the next few years.
There's no doubt that the technology will eventually come down to the end user, but that's something I think is still a distant dream.

Mind Control - If You’re Busy, You’re Doing Something Wrong: The Surprisingly Relaxed Lives of Elite Achievers

The Berlin Study
In the early 1990s, a trio of psychologists descended on the Universität der Künste, a historic arts academy in the heart of West Berlin. They came to study the violinists.

As described in their subsequent publication in Psychological Review, the researchers asked the academy’s music professors to help them identify a set of stand out violin players — the students who the professors believed would go onto careers as professional performers.

We’ll call this group the elite players.

For a point of comparison, they also selected a group of students from the school’s education department. These were students who were on track to become music teachers. They were serious about violin, but as their professors explained, their ability was not in the same league as the first group.

We’ll call this group the average players.

The three researchers subjected their subjects to a series of in-depth interviews. They then gave them diaries which divided each 24-hour period into 50 minute chunks, and sent them home to keep a careful log of how they spent their time.

Flush with data, the researchers went to work trying to answer a fundamental question: Why are the elite players better than the average players?

The obvious guess is that the elite players are more dedicated to their craft. That is, they’re willing to put in the long,Tiger Mom-style hours required to get good, while the average players are off goofing around and enjoying life.

The data, as it turns out, had a different story to tell…

Decoding the Patterns of the Elite

We can start by disproving the assumption that the elite players dedicate more hours to music. The time diaries revealed that both groups spent, on average, the same number of hours on music per week (around 50).

The difference was in how they spent this time. The elite players were spending almost three times more hours than the average players on deliberate practicethe uncomfortable, methodical work of stretching your ability.

This might not be surprising, as the importance of deliberate practice had been replicated and reported many times (c.f., Gladwell).

But the researchers weren’t done.

They also studied how the students scheduled their work. The average players, they discovered, spread their work throughout the day. A graph included in the paper, which shows the average time spent working versus the waking hours of the day, is essentially flat.

The elite players, by contrast, consolidated their work into two well-defined periods. When you plot the average time spent working versus the hours of the day for these players, there are two prominent peaks: one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

In fact, the more elite the player, the more pronounced the peaks. For the best of the best — the subset of the elites who the professors thought would go on to play in one of Germany’s two best professional orchestras — there was essentially no deviation from a rigid two-sessions a day schedule.
This isolation of work from leisure had pronounced effects in other areas of the players’ lives.

Consider, for example, sleep: the elite players slept an hour more per night than the average players.

Also consider relaxation. The researchers asked the players to estimate how much time they dedicated each week to leisure activities — an important indicator of their subjective feeling of relaxation. By this metric, the elite players were significantly more relaxed than the average players, and the best of the best were the most relaxed of all.

Hard Work is Different than Hard to Do Work

To summarize these results:
  • The average players are working just as many hours as the elite players (around 50 hours a week spent on music),
  • but they’re not dedicating these hours to the right type of work (spending almost 3 times less hours than the elites on crucial deliberate practice),
  • and furthermore, they spread this work haphazardly throughout the day. So even though they’re not doing more work than the elite players, they end up sleeping less and feeling more stressed. Not to mention that they remain worse at the violin.
I’ve seen this same phenomenon time and again in my study of high achievers. It came up so often in my study of top students, for example, that I even coined a name for it: the paradox of the relaxed Rhodes Scholar.

This study sheds some light on this paradox. It provides empirical evidence that there’s a difference between hard work and hard to do work:
  • Hard work is deliberate practice. It’s not fun while you’re doing it, but you don’t have to do too much of it in any one day (the elite players spent, on average, 3.5 hours per day engaged in deliberate practice, broken into two sessions). It also provides you measurable progress in a skill, which generates a strong sense of contentment and motivation. Therefore, although hard work is hard, it’s not draining and it can fit nicely into a relaxed and enjoyable day.
  • Hard to do work, by contrast, is draining. It has you running around all day in a state of false busyness that leaves you, like the average players from the Berlin study, feeling tired and stressed. It also, as we just learned, has very little to do with real accomplishment.
This analysis leads to an important conclusion. Whether you’re a student or well along in your career, if your goal is to build a remarkable life, then busyness and exhaustion should be your enemy. If you’re chronically stressed and up late working, you’re doing something wrong. You’re the average players from the Universität der Künste — not the elite. You’ve built a life around hard to do work, not hard work.

The solution suggested by this research, as well as my own, is as simple as it is startling: Do less. But do what you do with complete and hard focus. Then when you’re done be done, and go enjoy the rest of the day.

Any relationship is a “one day at a time” type of situation. No one can promise to love you forever, or even next month or tomorrow for that matter. All we have is how we feel today and the knowledge that feelings tend to change without much of a warning.

That’s the truth, and most girls kind of sort of know it in some hidden partition of their brain even while their conscious mind is absorbing forever-after fantasies from Disney movies. That’s why they’ll usually understand it if you explain it to them from square one, but if you fail to underscore the point before they’ve had time to imagine three kids and a white picket fence, it gets a lot harder. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

There are things you cannot choose – how you feel about someone, for example. To make promises about things that are not within your power to influence is dishonest. Unfortunately, society has hijacked your girl’s mind and inserted the idea that it’s not dishonest but instead romantic and awesome, so you’ll need to employ a classic reframe:

Her frame (which she’s hoovered straight up from pop culture) says that commitment is good and mature, and non-commitment is immature and a result of “a fear of commitment”.

Your frame says the opposite: that non-commitment is good and mature in its recognition of how reality works, and commitment is immature in its denial of the facts of life, and actually a result of a fear of loss – the immature person is scared of losing the special relationship he has so he tries to cling to it through unrealistic promises, which is what children do (“honey, mommy has to go to work soon, so we can only play for a little while” – “no! promise you’ll play with me all day! promise!”).

When it comes to making her accept your frame, timing is the most important factor because you must appear congruent, and unfortunately, silence is going to be perceived as acceptance of her frame, even if it’s only implicit. It’s going to be a challenge if you’ve let her make you her “Facebook official” boyfriend for five months and then pull a 180 and try to reframe the situation, but if you do it right off the bat it’s easy as pie. Congruence is everything in the frame game, if she feels that you really believe in what you’re saying and you’ve always believed it and it’s the most natural thing in the world to you, it will seem quite natural to her too.

(Super bonus challenge: doing this when a long-term girlfriend starts pestering you to marry her. Be warned – may result in injury.)

14 Safe Ways to Change Your Brain


It should come as no shock to you, if you are old enough to go to college, that there are plenty of ways out there to alter your gray matter. But if you recall those commercials, your brain on drugs is like an egg being scrambled, except it’s far less delicious. What you need are some methods to improve your think-machine while daring to be drug-free. So here’s 14 totally safe ways to change your brain, and your mind, man.
  1. Just breathe
    It may seem obvious, but research suggests slow, deep breathing like that practiced in yoga changes the brain’s ability to process information and increases awareness and cognition. And there’s even an app for it.
  2. Meditate
    Maybe you should just go ahead and take up yoga. Meditation is one of its major components, and studies have found that it can strengthen brain circuits that control your ability to empathize and concentrate. Do it enough and the effects remain even when you aren’t meditating.
  3. Play video games
    Yes, you read that right — playing video games improves your brain power. Take that, Mom! Scientists at the University of California at Irvine found that as little as 90 minutes of gaming a week thickened test subjects’ cortexes, the part of the brain responsible for a host of functions. So fire up the Xbox and enlarge your noodle.
  4. Earn-lay a new anguage-lay
    No one is exactly sure why, but even people with dementia retain better cognitive function if they are multilingual. It probably has something to do with the similar way doing puzzles and games keeps your brain vibrant and active. Whatever the reason, learn another language now and you’ll be happy you did when you’re 85, even though no one will listen to you then anyway.
  5. What makes perfect?
    You know from experience that doing something over and over is the best way to get good at it. It turns out this is because practice actually changes your brain structure, so that you can do a task without consciously thinking about it. This is the way to go, because the subconscious mind is far more efficient than the conscious.
  1. Think happy thoughts
    Those sappy posters that say things like "If you think it, you can be it" are pretty much true. Thoughts induce chemical processes in the brain that in turn affect bodily functions. So positive thinking changes your brain, which changes you. This idea is the basic foundation of cognitive therapy, and it works.
  2. Talk it out
    It is not recommended to replace medication for treating severe depression, but the effects of talking things over with another person produce changes in the brain that are akin to the changes caused by pharmaceuticals. If you have a personality disorder like social anxiety, you can improve up to seven times faster just by adding some chitchat to your therapy.
  3. Have a child
    Add "brain structure" to the list of things that change when you become a parent. If mouse pups are any indication, new mothers’ brains experience "olfactory-auditory integration" which makes them hyper-sensitive to their babies’ cries. And guys don’t seem to be exempt either. A 2006 study involving marmosets found new fathers develop larger prefrontal cortexes that help their memory.
  4. Drink water
    The benefits of drinking water cover the health spectrum from weight loss to recovery from illness. But a quick drink of water can also give you a substantial boost in cognitive performance, even if you’re already dehydrated. Never be without a bottle of water when you take an exam.
  5. Get out of town
    Nearly four out of five of us live in cities these days. Maybe that one other guy has it right, because the brains of urbanites are more susceptible to stress and mental illness. The bigger the city and the longer you’ve lived there, the more active your amygdala becomes, which processes stress and emotion.
  1. Eat your veggies
    Here’s one Mom was right about. Eating 2.8 servings of vegetables a day (or 3.0 if you care about not wasting food) slows brain aging by 40%. Although french fries and the tomato sauce on pizza are vegetables by the strictest of interpretations, leafy green veggies unfortunately get you the max aging slowdown.
  2. …and your fish
    You may have heard it said that fish is brain food, and it’s true. Eating fish or taking omega-3 supplements increases blood flow to the brain. Eating fish regularly can even prevent brain cells from kicking the bucket, and protect you from Alzheimer’s. Fish: it’s what’s for dinner.
  3. Get your juggle on
    Got a free week? You can increase the size of part of your brain’s occipital lobe that regulates motion detection after only seven days of three-ball juggling. Plus, you’ll be a total hit at parties.
  4. Exercise
    If exercise makes you smarter, why are there so many dumb jocks? Nevertheless, physical activity has been proven to improve cognition across the board. Exercise produces chemicals that make brain cells grow and connect and communicate with other neurons. So make time in your day to break a sweat.
