Superpowers: Flight vs. Invisibility

Here is an interesting question you can pose at your next social gathering.

"If you could choose between one of these two superpowers which would you prefer, Flight or Invisibility?"

But first let's set the ground rules. If you chose Flight you'll able to fly within the atmosphere at up to 1,000 miles an hour and if it's cold you'll have to endure it or dress warmer. You will only be able to carry with you what you can normally carry.

If you choose Invisibility you and your clothing and whatever you can carry will be invisible.

You'll find that this question get to the heart of the human condition.

Flight, with is loftiness, expresses our desire for freedom and to be seen and "let it all hang out and let your freak flag fly". Flight represents the hope that we can aspire to the better angels of our nature.

Invisibility, on the other hand, is the sneakier of the two. Most might use it to watch celebrities have sex or shoplift and thus expresses the base aspect of our nature but it too offers a freedom. A freedom to act without judgment or ridicule.

In my earlier day, without hesitation, I would have chosen flight as an aspiration of my goals for excellence.

But alas, excellence has it critics and few can be so unmoved when assailed by the subtle comments of "Show off" and "What an ego".

So, my preference has changed.

Invisibility has a real power when one knows how to use it well. It allows one to know that in the end all will fall into place and have it without calling any attention to yourself.

Flight or Invisibility? Which would you choose and why?

  1. Invisibility. Why? This quote is from the classic movie, The Invisible Man:

"An Invisible Man can rule the world!"

    Nuff' said.

  2. I too would take invisibility, flight might be interesting to be able to get from place to place 'as the crow flies' but for me I like being able to observe things undisturbed. Seeing things as they are formed and created. But also know more of whats going on than other people. I perhaps have a fault for wanting to know much more than I have ever been allowed. Not that I see it as a fault really.

  3. I guess, that will depends on how do I feel at the moment this quesiton is asked. If that moment, I can see a lot I can do and help, then, I'd choose to flight. That case, I can reach out to more people, get more done.

However, if that moment, I feel tired, lost, hurt, withdrawn, I'd then choose to be invisible, so that I can cry my heart out, can be left alone, just be myself for self healing...

  4. I know that I would choose invisibility over flight any time all the time. I prefer to fly under the radar, and not out in the open. I feel that it is better to remain anonymous, and see what is really going on vs. superficially what is going on. I also feel that I can learn more from and about people by being invisible. This way I can learn more than I otherwise would.
